July 4 is a perfect day for self-reflection for the United States. Do we acknowledge the pollution of our land and water, the increasing number of unhoused individuals, and the persecution of LGBTQ+ people and others?
When the country fails to embrace diversity, when racism and misogyny prevail, when policies discriminate against the poor while the wealthy prosper, and when politicians prioritize personal gain over public welfare, it’s our duty to embody love, civility, compassion, and mercy. It’s time for changed priorities from punitive actions to reformative ones, fostering civil dialogue, and advocating for courage and empathy when healthcare is cut while tax breaks are given to billionaires.
We must welcome immigrants and asylum seekers, for they are children of God. Seeking asylum is legal and a theological imperative. Christians have a responsibility to strive for social justice in the U.S., even if it means protesting against the country they love. We must heal wounds, comfort the grieving, feed the hungry, house the homeless, and work for reconciliation and truth. If not us, then whom?
Shalom, Paul
