Why Juneteenth Matters: Freedom, Justice, and the Church

Juneteenth marks a vital turning point in our national story. On June 19, 1865—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation—enslaved Black Americans in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free.

For the United States, Juneteenth is a necessary confrontation with history. It reminds us that freedom delayed is freedom denied, urging us to dismantle the systemic racism that still lingers in our institutions.

For the progressive church, Juneteenth is a deeply spiritual observance. It embodies the Gospel mandate of liberation, echoing Jesus’s mission to set the oppressed free. Celebrating it calls us to active repentance, truth-telling, and the ongoing work of justice.

We are thrilled to welcome Rev. Dr. Toni Hawkins, SWC UCC Conference Minister, to preach at our celebration. Join us as we reflect, honor the journey toward true equity, and recommit to building a world where God’s love and liberation belong to everyone.

Shalom, Paul
