‘Twas the week of Thanksgiving

The excitement builds with each passing moment in November until we finally reach Thanksgiving Day. The days might be growing shorter as we gather to celebrate Thanksgiving, but our gratitude grows greater with each passing day. Let us remember that the ultimate act of gratitude is not just counted in our blessings but demonstrated in our actions. True thanksgiving extends far beyond food on the dinner table. It means welcoming the stranger, the immigrant, and the neighbor.

The progressive heart of our faith calls us to embody love for our neighbor—near and far—as a tangible expression of our thankfulness to God. When we volunteer to cook, set up, serve, or clean up at our Thanksgiving meal, we are showing our thankfulness. When we donate food for the local food bank, mentor a student, or advocate for justice, we are actively serving the Divine spark in others.

This season, I hope we can reflect on how we can translate our gratitude into meaningful service. Let the spirit of Thanksgiving move us to love and serve our neighbor; that is the most profound blessing we can share.

Shalom, Paul

P.S. And if you want to join us today for a good Thanksgiving meal, come to the church between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. There’s always room at the table.
