Now that Christmas day is over, what does Jesus look like to you? We’ve just managed to make it through another season of shopping, rushing, parties, cooking, relatives, food, and such. So, what did you learn about what Jesus looks like?
Well, the baby born in Bethlehem looks like anything but a king to me. I imagine his face to look more like a prune—all smashed up the way newborns often look. He is a far cry from the blue-eyed, blond hair version so prominently and often displayed.
I hear his strong and healthy cry—but it’s still just that of a helpless and defenseless infant. Jesus is absolutely and utterly dependent upon the people around him for his well-being. Most notably, a young girl named Mary.
So, Jesus, to me, is majesty in the midst of the mundane. Jesus is holiness in the middle of sheep manure & afterbirth. Jesus represents divinity entering the world on the floor of a stable, through the womb of a teenager and in the presence of a carpenter.
I see Jesus in other ways.
- I see Jesus in tired souls helping the homeless.
- I see Jesus in the exuberant joy of a child dancing in the narthex while Christmas carols are playing.
- I see Jesus in the stories of family harmony that are told when once there were harsh words or no words.
- I see Jesus in the development of talents and skills of people thought to be too old.
- I see Jesus visiting, caring for, calling, and writing to the needy.
- I see Jesus in the courage to make a stand for justice for the poor and vulnerable.
- I see Jesus in a church that dares to accept all people.
- I see Jesus in you!
Shalom, Paul
