To make a difference despite the turbulence of our times

It has been a challenging season, but as Christmas draws near, let’s rediscover hope in the familiar stories of Jesus’ birth. I want to share how the Gospels of Luke and Matthew inspire the work we do right now.

Luke emphasizes that Jesus was born poor and was first visited by poor, dirty shepherds—people considered the absolute lowest class. This was the Gospel writer’s way of proclaiming that Jesus’ care is always directed toward those on the margins.

Today, our society still struggles to see and care for the marginalized. Yet, what gives me profound hope is the tireless work within our congregation:

  • The commitment of our Shower Trailer volunteers
  • Folks who consistently reach out through letter-writing to those imprisoned
  • Our regular food bank support, which has become our essential work

These actions (and many others) are living proof of caring for the least of these. The heart of our community is strong!

Matthew’s narrative reminds us that Jesus was born under political oppression and his family was forced to flee to Egypt, becoming political refugees.

The Church of the Palms honors this narrative with its long history of reaching out to those arriving in the U.S. Most recently, this fall, we’re sponsoring a water station in southern Arizona for border crossers.

To make a difference despite the turbulence of our times—that is the very meaning of the Incarnation. I invite you to be a part of these life-giving ministries!

Shalom, Paul
