Our overarching church theme this year has been “What makes you come alive? Go and do it! Because the world needs people who are alive.” That is taken from a Howard Thurman quote. It has served us well as we journeyed in ministry in 2023. The Progressive Art Installation where a tree and meadow emerged on the great wall in the sanctuary and a butterfly burst forth and took flight helped with the imagery. The butterflies going from the sanctuary out into the world demonstrated our call: “Go and do it!”
I ran across another quote from Thurman that speaks to me: “The hard thing when you get old is to keep your horizons open. The first part of life everything is in front of you, all your potential and promise. But over the years you make decisions; you carve yourself into a given shape. Then the challenge is to discover the green growing edge.”
How do we keep our horizons open?
Where are the places where we can grow?
Is changing one’s shape possible?
What are our growing edges?
If we can examine and try to answer those questions, you and I will be blessed.
Shalom, Paul
