Be outraged, church.

Optimism is hard to come by these days. But cynicism and pessimism won’t help us now. Together, we can make the world a better place. Actually, we can do more than our wildest dreams. That’s not a merely faith statement; it’s a fact verified by human history. Here are excerpts from the sermon last week:

The golden rule is a guidepost to people who take Jesus seriously. MLK, Jr. is what we get when someone takes Jesus seriously. What will be the results when The Church of the Palms takes Jesus’ teaching of the Golden Rule seriously?

Today in the U.S. there are more people afraid (for good reason) because of the political agenda is crushing folks. Facing up to a political machine intent of crushing people of color and people living on the margins seems impossible for little ol’ me. But what seems impossible for us as individuals, isn’t for us collectively.

Naomi O’Leary, the European correspondent for The Irish Times, said: “It’s time for us to come through for them now.”

Finally, I think Ben Franklin had the Golden Rule in mind when he said: “Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.” While observing the Golden Rule, be outraged, church. Be outraged. Do justice! Love kindness. Walk humbly with God.

Shalom, Paul
